According to the approved Development Program 2021 - 2025 of EDA THESS, investments of € 10 million for the next five years are foreseen in the Municipality of Volos that concern construction works for the expansion and reinforcement of the gas distribution network and the connection of new consumers.
The development program has included 2 new areas of the Municipality of Volos, Alykes in 2021 and Dimini in 2022. Today 66% of the population of the Municipality already uses natural gas, aiming to increase the percentage to 72% by the end of 2025.
The construction works of the distribution network for Alykes will start on June 15, 2021 and will be completed by August 31, 2021. A 2.1 km long medium pressure steel pipeline will be constructed to enhance the distribution network and connect Alykes aiming at both the safe and uninterrupted distribution of natural gas in the area and the integration of neighboring areas.
Respectively, the construction works of the distribution network for the supply of Dimini will start within the first quarter of 2022.
With the implementation of the Development Program and the increase of the gas penetration, EDA THESS will further contribute to the improvement of the quality of the environment. In this context, the Company supports the goals already set by the State for the reduction of the environmental footprint, as especially in the Municipality of Volos for the four years 2017-2020 from the use of natural gas, there was a reduction of gas emissions by:
- 213,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2)
- 800 tonnes of sulfur dioxide (SO2)
- 520 tonnes of nitric oxide (NO)
At the same time, the grant program for the replacement of oil heating systems with natural gas systems continues to be implemented throughout Thessaly and more than 750 applications in the Municipality of Volos have already been submitted.
The General Manager of EDA THESS, Mr. Leonidas Bakouras stressed that: "investments are evaluated and implemented according to the techno-economic criteria, the efficiency of the Gas Distribution Network and the reasonable return on investment. EDA THESS guarantees the safe use and uninterrupted distribution of natural gas to the domestic, commercial and industrial consumers of the Municipality.
The excellent cooperation between EDA THESS with the Municipal Authority and the Mayor of Volos, Mr. Achilleas Beos contribute to the development of the area, offering reduction of energy costs, increase of energy efficiency and limitation of gaseous pollutants in order to protect the environment.
EDA THESS in the future planning of the expansion of the distribution network, will take into account the expression of interest of the citizens, in order to cover more and more new areas".

Thanks to our persistence, but also to the spirit of good cooperation of EDA THESS, the works start soon and our citizens in Alykes and Dimini will enjoy both the good and cheap energy that ensures the use of natural gas, as well as a better environment by reducing air pollutants.
